What do want to get out of the ISA expo 2007?

Earlier this week, I was invited to present at one of the technical sessions for the upcoming ISA expo 2007. This particular session's focus, was on "NEW SIS hardware technology". Initially, I was asked to represent Siemens and to describe their state-of-the-art technology employeed on its safety design that just so happens to be very unique and quite possibly controversial....hmmh...So I guess folks want to learn more about advancements in safety technology, and of course I was happy to share.

When I responded with my interest, I was immediately notified by Mr. Paul Gruhn, (ISA 2007 Expo Safety & Security Co-Chair) that they really weren’t looking for me to present, rather for an end user, who could discuss the benefits of this technology. I responded to Paul (and the rest of the committee) that would be like having him present on his PC's benefit with say a Pentium chip, rather than an AMD chip. I said "I doubt you’d know the difference".

Paul did apologize for ruffling my feathers (and yes, we are still very good friends), but admitted what they really had in mind was some description of the overall user benefit of deploying this new fangled technology (i.e. keep it non-commercial).  Unfortunately, if it were only that easy...Other than the obvious, most can't even realize (nor understand) the benefit of staying with a legacy platfom, unless maybe we see a startling ad with barbwire and official looking government seals on it is convincing enough... (I'm sure some of you will know what I'm talking about here) ;-)

I told the committee, that while I did appreciate all of the volunteer work they are doing, let’s face it, attendance at the Fall expo has gotten so bad, engineers are having a hard time getting permission to even go. To top that off, most technical sessions, are just plain boring. We need to pump some energy and excitement into that sea of blank stares, yawning faces. I applauded when Mr. Ed Marszal (President of Kenexis) interjected with "yeah, we want to avoid a situation where we have consultants give their tenth presentation in a row on HIPPS where the content has not changed for six years". Thanks Ed, that’s definitely a move in the right direction.

I guess I’m just curious, what do people want to hear at the ISA expo, and who do you want to hear it from? Let me know, I'm curious along with many others....!

Charlie, I attended ISA Expo last year, as I have almost every year since 1991. While, of course, I have seen a huge decline in attendance at the expo, I definitely have noticed a marked improvement in the quantity of attendees and the quality of the presentations at the technical sessions. I think that ISA has done a good job of improving the technical sessions to the point where the ISA Show is now a really good technical conference that just happens to have an exhibition area. Ten years ago it was the exact opposite. That said, I am not opposed to presentations from suppliers or consultants. After all, these guys do this everyday and can share the knowledge they gain by working with multiple customers to solve real world problems. However, if they are accepted, there should be a rigorous review process to make certain that they are non-commercial and educational. I did not see a Call for Papers from ISA this year. Does this no longer mean they are accepting unsolicited papers? If so, I think that is a terrible mistake. Hand-picking topics and presenters is essentially a form of censorship. By doing this the board is driving their agenda and determining what we can and can't hear about. So, my feedback to ISA. Yes, please continue the great work in improving the quality of the presentations by making sure they are non-commercial, educational and not an over-done topic (ie. HIPPS). But please, don't limit the presenters to just your buddies or end-users that you're looking to win points with. AP

I forgot to mention.  The ISA safety commmitte is NOT opened up to non-solicited papers (a form of censorhip if you will).  thanks for the comment...

Hi Charlie,

I know that you know a lot about the topic, but people who pay for conferences don't want to listen to sales pitches. I just went through this discussion with Andy Chatha of ARC. Most people stick to the topic, but some just can't resist putting their company name all over the slides, dropping company product names everywhere, and promoting their company's point of view as the only right one versus other companies' points of view. NMW conferences used to be full of that sort of thing. So it only takes one to make conference organizers shy away from inviting suppliers. People quit paying to attend, then the conference goes away. So, if you're one of the good guys who sticks to the topic, then you're penalized because of the guys who can't quit selling.

By the way, I just found out about your blogs. They look good at first glance. You might check with your provider. There is no header on my RSS feed reader, so I just get a bunch of untitled feeds. Also, sometimes the feed is truncated on my reader. I prefer when I can read the entire post within my reader. Anyway, keep up the good work.
